1. What kinds of photos interested you most? Why?

2. What kinds interested you least? Why?

3. What do you notice about the questions posed for each photo?

4. In general, which kinds of questions seem easy to answer, assuming you had access to the original article?

Getting Stories From Pictures

Have your group analyze the photo and write answers to these questions on the attached sheet of paper.

Mr. Uttech will notify you when to pass it to the next group.

Take a moment to read through the other group's comments and then write your own.

1. Make a personal connection to the photo.

2. Write a question the photo brings to mind.

3. Write a detailed observation about the photo.

4. Make a guess as to what information the original caption of this photo imparted.

OBJECTIVES:
To analyze professional photographs and to determine what makes a good photograph.

To determine what techniques we should be using when taking photographs.

We will be focusing on the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW of stories.

5 Ws, H, and Who Cares?

When writing your "news of Castro," be sure to include the "who, what, where, when, why, how."

If you've already written your first "news of Castro" story. Think deeper about it today. Did you include the 'who, what, where, when, why and how?" Who will read your story and why?

Take a look today at www.azcentral.com or newspapers or magazines and answer these questions in WORD:
  1. How can the news be fun?
  2. How do these professionals use "who, what, where, when, why, how?"
  3. Why do people want to read stories like this? Who cares about this and why?
  4. How do the pictures help tell the story?

The News of Castro

Think about how you are the reporters for Castro Middle School. You will be writing, taking pictures and filming the news of Castro.

In these early days of school there are many events to write about: first day of school, new classes, new friends, new principals, new teachers, old teachers, old friends and more!

1. Go to www.azcentral.com.
  • Find an article that interests you and read it.
2. Write a story about Castro. We will post these stories onto our online "newspaper" The Castro Cougar Courier.
  • Remember to include who, what, when, where, why and how.
  • Your story should be about three paragraphs. In the journalism world, a paragraph is about 3-4 sentences. You should have a beginning, middle and end.

I was, I am, I want

Journalism is all about telling truthful stories. For this assignment you will be telling your story. Later in the class we will tell our friend's stories and then we'll tell stories about Castro.

You will be using Pages.

You will find Pages by clicking on the Spotlight in the upper right hand corner and typing iWork. You will see and iWork '09 folder come up. Click on it and pull Pages into your dock.

Pages is a word processing program and operates a lot like Word.

Please see your rubric for more information.

Enjoy telling your story!

Write One Interesting Fact

"Everyone has a story."

What does that mean? We all have families, likes, dislikes, thoughts and ideas. We all want to do something, be somebody or be somewhere.

All it takes to hear your story is someone willing to listen.

Write one interesting fact about your self in the comment column below.

Remember to be respectful, and responsible about communicating via the internet.

Welcome Back

Hello Cougars,

Welcome back to school. My name is Mr. Uttech and I'm glad to have you in class. We'll be working hard and learning a lot, but this class will also be a special experience for you.

We won't have your normal "fill-in-the-bubble" tests in this class. We won't have worksheets. You will be working on projects and have the opportunity to work in groups at times.

This is called a CTE class, which stands for Career and Technical Education. You'll be learning skills which you'll be able to someday use in a job. You may not necessarily work with computers all day, or become a photo-journalist, but you may need to know how to successfully use email, type or design a poster.

Two things are for sure. You will need to know how to communicate. You will need to know how to solve problems, or as I like to say "use your brain." These things are important for your life and for future jobs.

More importantly, these things are important for you right now.

Let's work hard, do good things and use our brains.
