2. Re-write the First Amendment so that it applies to you and the Castro Cougar Courier.

3. Look up Prior Restraint. What does it mean? How does it relate to the freedom of speech?

4. Why are there some things that you can't say?

5. How far do my First Amendment rights go as a student?

6. Are my rights being infringed upon by school rules? State laws? My parents?

7. What about privacy? Is it a reporter's responsibility to protect an individual's or group's privacy? Or is a reporter supposed to report everything they find because it is the truth?

Ethics, Part II

Go back to the Ethics Assignment and review.

"The school board has passed a motion on a vote of 5-4 to ban ipods stating that they are too distracting. You have been assigned to write the story for the Castro Cougar Courier."
  1. For the ethics assignment, you were to write an unbiased article about the news. An unbiased article only contains the who, what, where, when and why: the most important information. It does not contain your thoughts.
  2. Now write an opinion article on the matter. This is your viewpoint. Tell your reader why you agree or disagree with the decision to ban ipods.
