Journalism (and life) Principles
Click here to read: Journalism 101 - 16 Things You Learn in J-School
Pick 5 of the 16 things.
Answer these questions:
1. What does this mean to you?
2. Why do you think it is important?
3. How does it relate to writing stories about Castro?
4. How does it relate to life?
For example:
If I pick number 1: "Name Your Sources"
I would answer the questions like this:
1. This means I need to give credit to people I get information from. I am writing a story, but other people have information I need.
2. This is important because I did not find everything on my own. I had help and I need to acknowledge that I had help. This will show that I am an honest writer and reporter.
3. When writing stories about Castro I need to remember who I interviewed and give credit for what they say and what information they give me.
4. In life, it is important to remember who helps me and to give credit to them. In other words, I'm giving "props" to the people who help me do well.

Welcome Back
Welcome back to school. My name is Mr. Uttech and I'm glad to have you in class. We'll be working hard and learning a lot, but this class will also be a special experience for you.
We won't have your normal "fill-in-the-bubble" tests in this class. We won't have worksheets. You will be working on projects and have the opportunity to work in groups at times.
This is called a CTE class, which stands for Career and Technical Education. You'll be learning skills which you'll be able to someday use in a job. You may not necessarily work with computers all day, or become a photo-journalist, but you may need to know how to successfully use email, type or design a poster.
Two things are for sure. You will need to know how to communicate. You will need to know how to solve problems, or as I like to say "use your brain." These things are important for your life and for future jobs.
More importantly, these things are important for you right now.
Let's work hard, do good things and use our brains.

Cleaning up our video segments
We're now going to take it a step further. First, we'll analyze professional news segments by comparing and contrasting professional and our own news segments.
- What do professional news segments have that we don't have?
- What do professional news segments have that we could have?
- How are most professional news segments organized? (Think: Beginning, middle, end)
- Remember, we're focusing on HOW it is done, not WHAT the story is about.
- Channel 5 - http://www.kpho.com - News video is on the right hand side of the page.
- Channel 12 - http://www.azcentral.com/12news/ - Video is front and center.
- Google video search for news
2. In WORD:
- write down what is similar about the news segments.
- write down some differences between the news segments.
- write down what is similar between the professional news segments and our news segments.
- write down what is different between the professional news segments and our news segments.
4. Email me your answers.
- Be sure to write in complete sentences. Use proper grammar.
- List your sources.

You must include a quote from a friend.
You must think of a good hook for the beginning. Why would I want to read or watch your story? Your first sentence should make me want to read on.

Making current events YOUR event
First, answer the question of the day on our ning.
rhcastro5.ning.com or rhcastro6.ning.com
Continue to search news websites for a current event that interests or affects you.
cnn.com
espn.com
azcentral.com
Or different websites you find...
Find a news item that interests you because it is close to home, there is action or conflict, it deals with a famous person, happened recently or is new and exciting.
Research all that you can about that news item. Is there any history leading up to the news story?
Type your notes and sources in WORD and put together an iMovie segment discussing the news you picked. You can use video or pictures.
Share your ideas using the Ning.
Create a blog post discussing how you picked a current event, why you picked it and how you are going to use iMovie to present your current event. Will it be a photo slide show? Will you report on it? Will you interview other people?
Current Events: Revised
rhcastro5.ning.com or rhcastro6.ning.com

I am at fashion week in New York. A fashion show is about to go on. I won a contest to receive the chance to be in the front row and take pictures of the models. I also get interview a model of my choice. I’m so excited for this wonderful experience. My parents are so proud that I choose this career.
I’m sitting in the front row getting ready for waiting for the 1st model to come out. Then she comes out in this very co tour outfit. The clothing was a wild theme and the runway was oddly shaped. While the show was going on and I was taking pictures all I would see is flash after flash. The show was so exhilarating.
Interviewing Tyra Banks and it felt like such a rush. She acted kind towards me. She was respectful and answered my questions with ease. It was a great experience. Tyra even gave me her phone number to call her.
BEFORE THE CONCERT:
I’m in Arizona’s top concert place. I can’t believe it! I got the privilege of interviewing rapper T.I. Many young and older teens love this rap star. T.I. was and still is my favorite artist. I am so grateful that I get a chance to meet him. Good thing I became a journalist.
DURING THE CONCERT:
The fans are going wild. All you hear is “T.I.! T.I.!” It sounds like the fans love him. His music is awesome. It’s very popular. I’m going to interview him after the concert. I feel very lucky to do this.
AFTER THE CONCERT:
In just a few moments I will get a chance to meet and interview T.I.
He is very nice, very polite. I found out lots of things I didn’t know about. The fans will be happy to hear some of these facts. I didn’t know his full name was Clifford ‘tip’ Harris. I’m glad I got this opportunity.
